Remembering the Armada, which will take place 17-20 September 2026 was officially launched in Sligo yesterday by HE Teresa Lizaranzu the Spanish Ambassador to Ireland. A large audience gathered in beautiful sunshine at Sligo Port alongside the Galeón Andalucía for the event, which was attended by the staff of the Spanish Embassy, members and staff of Sligo County Council, the National Monuments Service and many visitors and friends.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Prannie Rhatigan, Chair of Spanish Armada Ireland, said that it was an honour and a pleasure to have so many people gathered, particularly in as the launch took place beside the world’s largest replica Spanish galleon, the Galeón Andalucía. Also in attendance at the event was the ship’s Captain Miguel Angel Cuesta Almansa and Liaison Officer Lupo Bathke Luce. The galleon has been at Sligo Port for a week and is open to visitors until Sunday next 12th July. Huge numbers of visitors have travelled from all around the country to visit the galleon and to see at first hand how sailors aboard the Armada might have lived. As many will know, three Spanish Armada ships were wrecked at Streedagh Beach in 1588 and over 1,100 men were lost, adding special poignancy to the visit.

Remembering the Armada is an annual festival where the Armada is commemorated at different venues around Sligo. These include a National Armada Conference that is supported by the National Monuments Service as well as concerts, tours and other events, including a remembrance parade that takes place at Streedagh Beach in memory of those who perished there 438 years ago.
